The digital twin that brings data to the forefront of facilities operations

Consider the possibilities when you connect near real-time and historical operational data to your building’s digital model.

You can track office occupancy trends and strategize to mitigate peak energy demand. Or adjust building systems to tune performance and optimize temperature, humidity, and employee comfort. Or spot anomalies ahead of equipment failures to minimize downtime and costs.

Now, you can use Autodesk Tandem to explore these and other ways to make your buildings more comfortable, sustainable, and cost-effective. We invite you to sign up for a free Tandem account here, then try out the new facility monitoring beta program.

Autodesk Tandem helps owners make data-informed decisions to improve building performance, boost occupant comfort, enhance energy management, and reduce operational costs.

When we first released Tandem last year, owners gained immediate contextual access to their asset’s data and documentation at handover. We’ve since advanced Tandem to provide near real-time monitoring and historic trend visualizations. New facility monitoring capabilities now open insights into how systems come together and how a building performs.

In short, you have data for decision-making at your fingertips.

Bringing building data to life

To achieve operational efficiency, owners have long recognized that good data is key. In fact, 71% of owners say that capturing and retaining more data during design and construction will reduce lifecycle operations costs. That’s according to research by Autodesk and FMI.

Design and construction data—housed in building information models or BIM—act as the foundation for visualizing physical assets in digital form. Owners can now make the most of those models by integrating cloud-enabled IT/OT systems that share data. By connecting the data, owners can layer on visualizations of current conditions, analyze historic trends or anomalies, and assess performance.

Facility monitoring capabilities in Tandem visualize ambient conditions and trend data from physical assets in the building management system in relation to their spatial context.

Tandem’s facility monitoring gives users access to preconfigured views of operations data in context. The responsive 3D models come to life with heat mapping capabilities so owners can begin to explore questions like:

  • What course correction is needed to achieve sustainability goals?
  • Which systems, equipment, and materials perform better than others across the portfolio?
  • What future planning and design decisions will maximize ROI?

Historically, operations teams made these observations inefficiently: through trial and error, at the moment of failure, or via employee feedback. Tandem’s facility monitoring capabilities remove the guesswork.

Innovating alongside you

At Autodesk, we have a long history of testing emerging technology with our own building designs and systems. For more than 15 years, our Toronto office has served as a learning lab for these experiments.

When we relocated in 2017, we used generative design to plan the office. We evaluated design options against goals that capture business and cultural objectives, and use sensors post commissioning for continuous evaluation. And here, in Toronto again, we’re gaining critical insights on Tandem’s facility monitoring capabilities and how to unlock the power of Building Management Systems connected to the edge (that is, devices processing data closer to where it’s being generated, thus leading to greater and quicker action-led results).

Our office shares a challenge common to most facilities. It’s equipped with smart-building technologies like IoT and building management systems, but most of the data is disconnected.

Tandem is beginning to allow us to consolidate the data, visualize trends, and analyze occupant comfort and general system performance. Here’s an early assessment from Jenny Lum, Director of Autodesk Workplace & Travel:

“We have offices all over the world and seeing Tandem in action is changing how we think about project data and management. A digital twin with facility monitoring capabilities allows our staff to study the performance of our offices remotely and see how everything is built, deployed, and connected. We value the speed at which we can access the live conditions and reference the history we need for decision-making.”

The Toronto office is just the beginning. With 12,600+ employees in offices across the globe, we see incredible opportunities for Tandem to improve Autodesk’s building portfolio performance and our employees’ experience.

What can we reimagine together next?

You may be ready to jump in and analyze specific metrics. Or maybe you need support gathering and organizing your data first. We invite you to bring us along as you explore better building operations.
